Apr 23, 2016: quick but SHODDY work on the placebo default tab setting. Works first time, but then I leave the app for a day because... well, no games on till tomorrow, then bring it up again, it briefly shows the Scores tab, then flips to the Playoffs tab. Nice try.
Apr 14: quick work on the default tab, which on my 2 iThingies is now happily set to Scores. Thanks NHL. 10 points to Griffindor. But while the scrolling roster keeps getting ripped from my hands whenever you feel like updating the screen, Slytherin keeps gaining on you.
Apr 13, 2016: when Im on the game screen and have the right side scrolled up to look at the roster, you jerk it out of my hands every time you want to update the on-ice player icons on the rink image. DONT DO THAT! Its MY iPad, not yours. If you want to make the roster a separate scrolling pane under the rink image, great, then I can have both on the screen at once; if not, just dont change the school position in order to update the on-ice players. When Im interested in the on-ice players Ill go up there and look in my own time.
Apr 10, 2016: new "select default tab" feature sounded great till I found it would only let me choose between my top team (Jets. Yeah, I know...) and "latest" tabs; I just want the scores tab to be default!
Feb 24, 2016: now ready to say "not a good redo." Game clock moves fitfully; missing the games ribbon at top, so have to go back to Scores screen to keep track of other games; cant see when TV timeout ends, so quick peeking at other games on the TV often causes me to miss resumption of play; kept crashing on me the other day when I tried to get game screens for 2 of the 4 games being played; tapping a player on the rink image to get details works on and off; keeps coming up in Videos when I tap a game, but I want Stats view; had to call support to find out how to watch free game of the day (have to use browser to create a NHL.com login, cant do from within app); slow to launch. But the stats are in general improved so there is some positive. Not much, however.
Feb 04, 2016: Im trying to like this new design but its difficult to do so. Yes the stats are improved and thats nice, but in the game screen the clock at top stalls at whatever time you switched to that game, and with the games ribbon gone from the top you cant keep track of other games, and to check out another game, you need to go back to the schedule rather than just tap on a different game in the ribbon. And the huge photo that shows up on the pregame screen leaves you wondering what to do to see anything interesting; turns out you can scroll up but thats not obvious.
The old charcoal gray background to the rink also made it easier to read player names; it would help if they desaturated the team logos on the ice a bit more, so they dont interfere with the visuals quite so much.
2 bug fix releases now and it doesnt really seem to have improved at all.
Update Oct 2015:
Note: I use only the free version functionality, since I have NHL Center Ice via DirecTV.
The yellow screen problem still occurs, despite the "fix", and in the newest rev on newest iOS.
New problem: in Game screen, it loses the server 2-3 times per hour and blanks the games ribbon at top; when the server comes back it reloads and indexes the ribbon to YESTERDAYs first game, not todays. Dont know why it has started losing the server, but when it comes back, I want todays games, not yesterdays. Im a fan, not a historian.
Finally, the game events box at bottom (All, Goals, Penalties, etc) "stalls", totally losing its events. Score is 3-2, has been so for 15 minutes, and often the Goals list shows only 1 or 2 of those goals. Killing and starting the app invariably gets the full list (for a while, till it stalls again) so its not a server problem, its in the app itself.
Update May 2015:
I was having trouble where the Game window would show the rink on a light gray--rather than dark--background, with the rink outlined in yellow. Asked Support for help, got a response the next day with some reasonable and not-difficult steps to fix it. They also requested a screenshot so they could investigate.
Havent seen the problem since, though its still too early to be sure.
Anyway, NHL App Support rocks!
As does the App!

For me, this app has gone from "kinda nice" to being my most-used app during the season. The main Schedule window is a good dashboard to see the games around the league all at once. The individual Game views are pretty detailed, understandable, and generally up-to-the-minute wrt scores, penalties, line changes, etc. Its a great improvement over last years timeline ribbon at the bottom.
The fact the latest version runs nicely on my original-edition iPad is a big bonus.
A few things could be improved:
- would like to be able to get detailed player cards by tapping a line in the Game view roster list at right rather than waiting till the player comes on ice to tap his picture
- would be nice to have some non-player info, like coaches, etc
- some history would be nice, e.g. Champions/losers list for e Cup, Hall of Fame player info, etc, etc. yeah, Wikipedia has all this...
- be nice if the leader boards were sortable by clicking the column headers (e.g. Goals, Assists, Points, etc) rather than having to go back to the previous page and select a different category
But its very good, and is one of my favorite apps and has been improving steadily.
Mid-late Sep 2014 update crashes immediately for me too. iOS 5.1.1 on original iPad.
Hope they fix it soon.
